DJ Profile: Thurston from NC
Thurston Alexander-Smith, dad of 2, musical magpie, social justice firebrand.
Have you DJed before?
I had a weekly radio show on my college's station, WASU, 90.5 in the late 90's / early 00's.
Why are you a DJ now?
I miss making mixtapes so bad. It's so fun to just pick a theme and go to town, creating the ebb and flow of songs.
How would you describe your show?
It's a mixtape for folks that can't make up their mind. I love a wide variety of music, and I like smashing it together in fun ways.
How do you assemble a show?
I find some theme; maybe what happened that day in history, maybe something in the news, maybe something just popped into my head. After collecting every song I can think of that may be related to the theme, I try to make an ebb and flow of songs, creating a wave of feeling, more than content.
What's your favorite thing about DJing on Gutsy Radio?
Life is so busy; sometimes you forget to invest in even the most vital things that make you who you are. I appreciate the opportunity to re-engage with the art I love so much.
What is a favorite show of yours in the Gutsy Radio archive?
Why do you like this show?
Shows off how I pick a dumb theme as an excuse to throw in whatever I find. Mix of popular and more indie stuff.
